Can I buy digital files?
It is inevitable that I get asked this question by nearly every person who inquires about my services. I suppose digital is the thing we’re most familiar with these days — we look at photos on our phones and social media.
Here’s the truth: You hire a professional photographer because you want a quality product.
A pile of high-resolution photos straight from the camera is not a quality product. Here’s why:
1. A professional photographer does so much more than click a button on the camera then press print — I’ve spent years mastering software to edit and optimize your images for display. This may include lightening your eyes, your wrinkles, your teeth. Brightening up the background. Taking out an odd shrub or a bra strap. Switching someone’s head from a similar photo. Etc, etc.
2. As a photography professional, my head holds massive amounts of product knowledge to quickly narrow down choices to options that will look great in your home. Then, I make sure the final product is beautiful. I do the work, you enjoy the heirloom-quality art.
3. Show me someone who has a CD of images from a photographer, and I will show you a person who feels guilty because she hasn’t done anything with it. Why? it’s totally overwhelming and not in her wheelhouse. Further, her only printing options are big box stores or the internet, where there is no human doing a quality-check. Consumers’ printing options these days, sadly, are machines that may or may not be calibrated correctly.
My goal with every client is to create a custom art piece for your home. Photography is a vehicle to recall memories, share with others, and preserve family history. And there’s a beauty in having these values showcased in a tangible thing. Let’s figure out what that heirloom piece looks like for you. Then, we’ll produce it!
So, will I sell digital files? There are situations where a client might need a high res file, and I will sell one on an individual basis that will include some post-production work. I will not sell an entire photo shoot.
